Edward Bruce Haslingden (born March 1923 in Sydney , † April 17, 2007 in Kelton Plain ) was an Australian cross-country skier .

Career

Haslingden attended Canberra Grammar School . He started his athletic career there at an early age and took part in school athletics competitions. He represented his school at the Associated Grammar Schools in Sydney. He was also the captain of the U16 cricket team and also played football.

In 1938 he started winter sports at the Cooma Ski Club . Only one year later he won his first regional cross-country skiing race with the race for the Hotel Kosciusko. His sports career was interrupted by the Second World War. In 1947 he continued the sport and in 1950 was nominated for the national championships in the selection team of New South Wales . Haslingden, who has meanwhile started for the Kosciusko Alpine Club , missed a title, but was able to convince with good performances and was then accepted into the national team.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 , Haslingden was part of the first Australian winter Olympic team and, together with Cedric Sloane, was one of the first Australian cross-country skiers at the Olympic Games.

In the individual race over 18 km, he finished 74th. Over 50 km he retired before the end of the race. Haslingden carried the Australian flag at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. After the Games, he received invitations from Sweden , Germany and Finland , where he competed. He was the first Australian ever to start in competitions in these countries.

Haslingden competed in cross-country skiing races well into old age. In 1993 he took part in the Engadin Skimarathon and finished eighth in his age group.

2007 died Haslingden on his farm at a staph infection.
