Cedric Hay Sloane (born October 19, 1915 in Armadale , † February 6, 1992 in Greta West ) was an Australian cross-country skier .

Career

Sloane attended Geelong College from 1928 to 1934 before moving to Ormond College and later studying at Melbourne University . On May 22, 1941, he enrolled in the Royal Australian Air Force .

After he came into contact with the sport at an early age and was active in football and athletics on a regional level, he began training in cross-country skiing when he entered the military. Even after his transfer to Canada , he continued training. While his unit was being transferred to India via Northern Ireland , Gibraltar and Egypt , Sloane was taken to Allahabad British Military Hospital with a suspected malaria . His illness was later diagnosed as yellow fever . After his recovery he was transferred back to England and was there on several missions for anti -submarine defense and on patrol flights . On December 19, 1945 he was released from the Royal Air Force.

At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 , Sloane was part of the first Australian winter Olympic team and, together with Bruce Haslingden, was one of the first Australian cross-country skiers at the Olympic Games.

In the individual race over 18 km Sloane finished behind his teammate in 75th place. Over 50 km he retired before the end of the race.
