Brucefield Church

The Brucefield Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Whitburn in the Council Area West Lothian . In 2008 the structure was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A. The monument protection also includes an adjacent church building of older date. The church is still in use as such.

history

In 1857, a Free Church was built in Whitburn . Two halls were added in 1915 and 1958. In 1965 work began on a new building next to a design by Tom Duncan . The work was completed the following year and the older church building was converted into a community hall and a sports hall.

description

The buildings are located at the junction of Brucefield Drive and Main Street ( A705 ). The former Free Church is an elongated structure made of quarry stone roughly cut into blocks . Today closed pointed arched windows flank the north-facing, pointed arched entrance portal with simple walls . The building ends with a steep, slate-covered gable roof . In 1915 a one-story, plastered hall was added, to which a second, elongated hall with square windows was added in 1958.

The adjacent modern church building is stylistically attributable to brutalism . It has a roughly elongated floor plan with partially rounded edges. The interior is based on Scandinavian churches with wooden ceiling panels and sober benches. Historic Scotland counts the building among the most important modern church buildings in Scotland and sees the Brucefield Church in a row with the various buildings by Gillespie Kidd & Coia . The design was probably inspired by the design of the pilgrimage church Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp by Le Corbusier . The fact that it is a Presbyterian church is also unusual. Unlike the Catholic Church in Scotland , the Presbyterian Church opted for a conservative design in most cases.
