Well sanctuary of Coni

Nurage Santu Millanu

The well sanctuary of Coni near Nuragus in the province of Sud Sardegna in Sardinia lies at the foot of the hill Colle di Valenza, on the border between the Marmilla and the Sarcidano . The area is historically significant because of the rural church of Santa Maria `e Alenza (formerly with a Roman milestone), but also because of the Roman city of Valentia, the medieval finds and the Nuraghe Santu Millanu.

The well sanctuary ( Italian Pozzo sacro ) made of basalt blocks was excavated by A. Taramelli together with the nuraghe. Only the actual fountain tholos is preserved , to which a 2.6 m long angled trapezoidal five-step staircase leads down, the width of which narrows from 1.0 to 0.7 m. During the excavation, a small bronze of a praying woman in a long flared skirt and cloak, known as the "praying matriarch", was found.

The nuraghe Santu Millanu, 280 m away, is a tholosnuraghe with a chamber with three niches and the remains of an outer bastion. Millanu occurs in the Sardinian language in names such as Emiliano or Gemiliano. The name of a Christian saint was transferred to the old cult site in order to eradicate the old cults. This is a constant that affects most nuraghi, of which it would be interesting to know the original name.

Nearby is the Forraxi Nioi well sanctuary .
