Bruno Mégret

Bruno Mégret (born April 4, 1949 in Paris ) is a right-wing extremist French politician . He was the General Secretary of the Front National (FN) and is the founder of the Mouvement national républicain (MNR).

Life

Mègret studied at the École polytechnique and the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées .

After joining Le Pens FN in 1985 , he successfully ran for the 1986 National Assembly for the Isère department . From 1989 to 1999 he had a mandate for the European Parliament . He organized Le Pen's election campaigns and was délégué général for the FN. After a disagreement about the future strategy of the FN and personal differences with Le Pen, he left the FN in December 1998 and founded the MNR.

In 2002 he ran for the presidential election, but only got 2.33% of the vote. In the next presidential election in 2007 he did not run and recommended the supporters of the MNR to choose Le Pen.

In 2007 he was sentenced by a court in Aix-en-Provence to a suspended sentence of 8 months, a fine of 8,000 euros and a year of ineligibility for misappropriating public funds. To get the necessary support signatures from elected representatives for his presidential candidacy in 2002, he had sent thousands of letters in November and December 2001 via the mayor's office of the city of Vitrolles , where his wife Catherine Mégret was mayor. This resulted in damage of 75,000 euros, which was used for postage.

He resigned from all political offices on May 20, 2008.
