Bruno Maria Carmelo Oberle (born October 12, 1955 in St. Gallen ) was Director of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) from 2006 to 2015 .

Bruno Oberle grew up in Locarno and studied biology at the ETH Zurich , completed additional training in economics and education, and then did his doctorate at the ETH Zurich. From 1980 he worked in the field of environmental management and protection. As a consultant, he supported public administrations and companies in technical and strategic questions of environmental protection. For several years he was a lecturer at the Department of Environmental Sciences at ETH Zurich.

From 1999 to 2005, Bruno Oberle was Deputy Director of the then Federal Office for the Environment, Forests and Landscape (BUWAL) and was responsible for technical environmental protection . On October 1, 2005, the Federal Council appointed him director of the then SAEFL and on January 1, 2006, director of the Federal Office for the Environment. At the end of 2015 he left the FOEN and took up a position as adjunct professor for green economy at EPF Lausanne . On January 27, 2016 , the Federal Council elected Marc Chardonnens as the new director of the FOEN as his successor .
