The Brunswick River is a river in the north of the Australian state of New South Wales , which in the Tasman Sea , a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean , opens .

The main arm of the Brunswick River extends for 20 km from west to east and is fed by two arms, one north and one south.
The north arm extends for only 5 km and is called Marshalls Creek. The Marshalls Creek flows through the place Ocean Shores . The Marshalls Creek was named after Bob Marshall, an early inhabitants of the town of Brunswick Heads , where the river flows into the sea. Marshall was a lumberjack and built the first hotel in Brunswick Heads in 1884.
The south arm of the river is called Simpsons Creek and is about 15 km long.

In 1828 the river was first mapped by Henry John Rous . In 1849, lumberjacks settled in the estuary and built the first permanent settlement , from which the village of Brunswick Heads developed over the decades. The most important settlement on the Brunswick River today, however, is Mullumbimby inland .

The Brunswick River transports noticeably large amounts of sediment (about 350,000 m³ per year). In the area where the river flows into the Pacific Ocean, there are approximately 1 km² of seagrass meadows. In addition, the mouth of the river, which is characterized by strongly developed mangroves , proves to be advantageous for local oyster farming in Brunswick Heads .

The Brunswick River has always carried large amounts of nutrients. Nevertheless, the river is increasingly suffering from the region's agricultural production, which is polluting its ecosystem through the input of nutrients and toxins .
