Bryocoris pteridis is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 2.0 to 4.0 millimeters long. They occur both fully winged (macropter) and with receding wings (brachypter). Brachyptic individuals are more common, while macrophic animals are mostly males. The head of the bedbugs is at least partially dark brown or black. The first part of the antennae is longer than the width of the head.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is common in Europe to the northern edge of the Mediterranean and east to Siberia. In Central Europe they are widespread and occur both in the low mountain ranges and in the Alps up to 1500 meters above sea level.
They colonize shady, moist habitats in forests, especially deciduous forests, where the host plants of the species grow.
Way of life
The bugs live on ferns of the potted fern family (Polypodiaceae). They are mainly found on worm ferns ( Dryopteris ), bracken ( Pteridium ) and anthyrium . They especially suckle on fern fronds that carry sporangia . Hibernation takes place as an egg from which the nymphs hatch in May. The adults appear from June. They mate in July and live until the end of August / September; females are rarely found in October. The females lay their eggs individually on the upper side of the median nerves or the stems of the host plants. Occasionally one can find adult nymphs in the second half of September, so that at least a few apparently a second generation is formed per year.
