Genre : Bryophila
Type : Bryophila ereptricula
Scientific name
Bryophila ereptricula
( Treitschke , 1825)

Bryophila ereptricula is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae). The species is also known by the synonym Cryphia ereptricula . It was sometimes referred to as the rock forest lichen owl, brown-gray algae owl, gray-winged lichen owl or lichen owl. However, none of these names caught on. The name Bryophila ereptripula, which used to be found in the literature, was obviously based on a typographical error.

features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 23 to 28 millimeters. Their front wings are narrow and mostly dark gray-brown in color. The whitish root field and an equally colored field near the inner corner are striking. These areas also occasionally shimmer slightly yellow or green. The midfield sometimes has a slightly reddish tint. Lines and blemishes are usually blurry and indistinct. The rear wings without drawing are gray-brown in color and bordered with yellowish-white fringes.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are colored gray-blue. The side lines formed from orange-yellow spots are typical of the species. They also show large, black point warts.

Doll

The light brown doll has a squat shape. There are four slightly curved bristles on the cremaster , the middle ones of which are slightly longer.

Similar species

Compared to the similar dark green lichen owl ( Cryphia algae ), strong green colors predominate in the basal field, especially in newly hatched specimens. Greenish areas can also be seen near the tip of the forewing and at the inner corner. The moths are also slightly smaller than those of ereptricula . If the specimen has flown out, there is a risk of confusion with the brownish lichen owl ( Bryophila ravula ), Bryophila vandalusiae , Bryophila rectilinea or Bryophila tephrocharis . A reliable allocation can be made in these cases by a genital morphological examination .

habitat

Regarding the overall distribution of Bryophila ereptricula , new findings should be awaited, as it was often thought to be a form of Bryophila ravula - although described as a separate species - well into the 20th century . As a result, many older statements actually refer to ravula . Further uncertainties arose due to incorrect determinations with flown or faded algae butterflies . Bryophila ereptricula is preferred on old walls and bridges as well as in rocky areas.

Way of life

The moths are nocturnal, fly from July to August and live very inconspicuously. During the day they like to sit on rocks or walls overgrown with lichen and visit artificial light sources at night . The caterpillars feed on lichens and algae . During the day, they usually rest in an enclosure that is laid out in cracks in the wall. They overwinter and pupate in May of the following year.

Danger

In Germany , Bryophila ereptricula occurs only sporadically in a few federal states and is classified on the Red List of Threatened Species in Category 2 (highly endangered), in some areas even as "critically endangered".
