bs.to (short for Burning Series ) is a German-language video-on-demand proposition to the free streaming of TV shows . The website is (measured by Alexa Internet rank) 63rd of the most visited websites in Germany and 41st in Austria .

Offer and statistics

The website offers over 4200 different pages about television series with links to free streams of each episode. Registration to use the offer is not necessary, but over 200,000 users have registered. In total, there are over 17,300 linked TV series episodes and over 620,000 links in total. Hundreds of links are deleted every day. With the offer, the site is in competition with fee-based video-on-demand services such as Netflix , Prime Video and the like. The video hosters on offer currently include Vivo, Streammango, OpenLoad, Very Stream, Vidoza, Vidto, Streamplay, Streamcherry and vevio. In the past, other video hosts were also part of the offer, but were later removed. 76.2% of users are from Germany , 14% from Austria , 3.9% from Switzerland , 1.4% from Luxembourg and 0.8% from Italy .

There is a chat on the main page, new releases are also displayed. The site is also available as a mobile app for Android , but is not sold in the Google Play Store , but only on its own site. The partner site is cine.to, which specializes in films .

history

The site started on December 1, 2009 at burning-series.org with The Simpsons and other comedy cartoons after moving from a site specializing in The Simpsons . The offers have been published under Burning-Series.to since 2011 . On April 1st, 2015 the site changed to the address bs.to. At the time, the site had already published over 2000 series. Numerous fake pages appear, which simulate the website in a deceptively real way and ask users to download software (mostly containing computer viruses ) or to pay. In 2019, the site was also available at the address burningseries.co.

Legal position

The ruling of the European Court of Justice of April 25, 2017, classified the unauthorized streaming of copyrighted offers that the user could recognize as a copyright infringement as illegal. Burning Series is also affected. However, the site itself does not act as a video host, but only provides the links to the individual video hosts on which the streams can be found. The site operators therefore distance themselves from allegations of illegal activity.

Due to the high technical complexity, the tracing of viewers proves to be difficult, which also reduces the risk of a warning . In addition, the operators say they do not store any data or references to accessing IP addresses . In addition, the server is located outside the European Union, which is why the German Federal Data Protection Act (BDSG) does not apply ( Section 1 (4) BDSG). Video-on-demand providers , on the other hand, are recommended as legal and secure alternatives who have acquired the appropriate licenses and thus authorize the user to legally use the offer and protect them from dubious offers.

Before the ECJ's decision, streaming was a legal gray area in German-speaking countries , as there was uncertainty about how a temporary copy in the main memory should be assessed. Accordingly, only the download was clearly illegal. The website itself is subject to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act .

Since December 2018, access to bs.to has been granted by some providers, e.g. B. Vodafone and blocked by UPC since March 28, 2019. The block is made by blocking the DNS server of the provider.
