Buakea kaeuae is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 20 to 23 millimeters for the males and 21 to 24 millimeters for the females. The feelers are thread-shaped. The head and thorax are covered with long hair. The males are a little darker in color than the females. The drawing of the forewings is similar to that of Buakea venusta , but it is less contrasting. The basic color is darker and gray-brown, the oblique transverse band is thinner and barely visible, a light brown kidney defect with a brown border on the side is created. The hind wings are mixed with whitish brown and gray. A flaw is not created.

In the males, the uncus is narrow, spatulate and tapers towards the tip. On the tegumen there are medium-sized, rounded peniculi (brush-shaped processes). The vinculum has a U-shaped saccus. The valves have a heavily sclerotized costal edge, which ends in the shape of a base and protrudes slightly downwards. The cucullus is quite thin and elongated. The juxta is almost elliptical and hardly sclerotized. The aedeagus is slightly curved. The vesica has a strong and fairly sharp cornutus. It is beak-shaped and about half the length of the penis.

In females, the corpus bursae is pear-shaped and about as long as the ductus. There are two signs on the corpus bursae, with a sharp point at approximately right angles to them. A long, heavily sclerotized process of the corpus bursae runs along the ductus bursae. The duct is narrow and straight and only slightly sclerotized. The ostium is almost ovoid. The post-vaginal plates are hardly sclerotized.

The caterpillars reach a length of 30 to 35 millimeters and a thickness of 3.5 to 4.0 millimeters. The head is smooth and black, the prothoracic shield pale brown. The body is pale pink and shimmering. The pinnacula and the caudal plate are black.

distribution

Buakea kaeuae has only been found at two locations in Kenya . The biotopes were evergreen scrubland and acacia-covered grassland at an altitude of 1600 to 1700 meters.

biology

The caterpillars develop in the stems of Panicum maximum .
