Book Institute

The Book Institute (Polish Instytut Książki ) is a Polish state cultural institution for the promotion of Polish books.

The Polish Book Institute was established on January 11, 2004 in Kraków on Szczepański Street on the initiative of the then Minister of Culture, Waldemar Dąbrowski . Its aim is to promote Polish literature in the world.

history

Its forerunners were after the Second World War 1946-1949 an institute of the same name in Łódź and then from 1954 the "Institute for Books and Reading" ( Instytut Książki i Czytelnictwa , IKiCz) attached to the Warsaw National Library and still in existence today .

Activity in Poland

In Poland, the Book Institute supports Polish books on their way from authors and publishers to book fairs to individual readers and to the work of the libraries. Important fields of work since the foundation were, among other things, questions of the book price and the reorganization of the libraries as cultural centers. The book institute encouraged the establishment of over 1,300 reading clubs. For Polish readers, the Book Institute delivers new book news every day and thus has a similar function to the German Börsenblatt . The Book Institute is a partner of the two national book fairs in Krakow and Warsaw.

Activity abroad

Above all, however, it promotes Polish literature abroad through exhibition stands and events. It is a regular participant at the Frankfurt Book Fair , the Kiev Book Arsenal , the Lviv Book Forum , at book fairs in Paris, Moscow, Beijing, Delhi, etc. On these occasions it continuously presents the current Polish literary landscape through bilingual almanacs “New books from Poland” , “New Books from Poland” etc., which are also available as documents on the website. Part of his work abroad is also the promotion of translations. In this context, it has also published bibliographies of previously translated Polish books. Since its inception, the Poland Translation Program has funded and translated over 1,800 Polish books. The Book Institute is integrated into the larger framework of the work of the Polish Institute , which presents the culture of Poland to the world.

Role model function

Grzegorz Gauden was the first director of the Book Institute, who was influential through a variety of impulses . Dariusz Jaworski has been the new director since April 4, 2016 . The book institute acted as a role model for the establishment of further book institutes in post-Soviet Eastern Europe and is in particular the godfather of the book institute created in 2016 in Ukraine.

Editor and translator award "Transatlantyk"

The Book Institute publishes bilingual anthologies of selected translations of new Polish authors at book fairs abroad and publishes extensive studies on the Polish book market. Representing the Polish Institute, it also refers on its website to the most important Polish cultural magazines with overviews of contents, for the book world to “ Nowe Książki ” and “akcent”. Since 2005 it has been awarding the “Transatlantyk” prize endowed with 10,000 euros. In 2007 the German polonist Albrecht Lempp received it .
