The book culture magazine was founded on May 14, 1989 by Michael Schnepf , Nils Jensen and Manfred Kriegleder in Vienna . The magazine appears six times a year for German-speaking countries, and several special editions accompany the main issues.

Since its inception, it is the sheet line of the magazine, to create a medium that reports authors, new releases and literary trends. It does not see itself as a literary magazine - and thus, with a few exceptions, does not publish any primary texts - but rather as a link between the literature / book industry and the readers. The intention of the editors is to provide up-to-date information to those interested in books. Each issue contains interviews, portraits, reviews, background reports and mixed reports from fiction to non-fiction and audio books to children's and youth literature.
From 1989 to 1991 the magazine appeared four times a year, from 1992 six times. Michael Schnepf and Nils Jensen are responsible as editors, Hannes Lerchbacher is the editor-in-chief.

Over time, additional special editions have been developed that cover different topics. Currently appearing:
- Schön & Gut (appears annually 2 weeks before Easter)
- Crime theme (published annually at the end of June)
- Topic Austria (published annually for the Frankfurt Book Fair)
In 1989 the book culture was launched as an association, and in 1990 the association became the Buchkultur VerlagsgesmbH. converted, which still publishes the magazine today.
The Buchkultur VerlagsgesmbH. maintains networks and cooperations for initiatives and projects that deal with the topics of books and reading and with the media and content industry as a whole. The focus is on studies, idea concepts and the implementation of projects for the industry.
In 2008, Buchkultur launched the prize for the "Science Book of the Year" together with the Austrian Ministry of Science, an annual award which is given in four categories for particularly successful communication of scientific content in non-fiction form to the general public. Since 2015, this prize has been awarded by the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research (BMBWF), Buchkultur VerlagsgesmbH. is currently responsible for the organizational implementation.
