The Buckeye Table (English for chestnut table ) is a 20 km long and 3 to 8 km wide plateau in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land . In the Horlick Mountains it occupies the central part of the Ohio Range . The snow-covered plain has striking cliffs on the north flank and merges into the polar plateau in the south .
The naming was based on the proposal of the topography engineer William Hanell Chapman (1927-2007) of the United States Geological Survey , who carried out surveys of the Horlick Mountains between 1958 and 1959. It is named after the nickname Buckeye, derived from the Ohio horse chestnut , for the US state of Ohio or Ohio State University , whose scientists explored the Ohio Range and the rest of the Horlick Mountains between 1960 and 1961.
