Exterior

Budjonnys emerged from crosses the breeds Donpferd and English thoroughbred. The croup and neck are very muscular, the head noble, the legs long and thin. The withers are high and pronounced. The tail is set high, the hooves are hard. The mane and tail are medium in length and thin. In terms of coat colors, Budjonnys mainly have foxes and browns, but also black horses. Foxes in particular often have a metallic gold sheen in their fur, which can be found in many Russian breeds. The gaits are expansive, the canter is persistent and fast.

interior

Budjonnys have characteristics of the horse breeds from which they are descended - English thoroughbreds and Don horses. Budjonnys have a strong character, high intelligence and are very temperamental, which requires an experienced person in dealing with the horses. Budjonnys are considered to be one-man horses , which means that the person you trust in such a horse can count on the reliability and cooperation of its four-legged partner, while it reacts more cautiously to unknown people. Foals in Russia grow up free running in the steppe, this promotes their great endurance and surefootedness and makes them good cross-country horses. Thanks to their intelligence, they are riding horses that think for themselves and find their way independently in difficult terrain. Due to these characteristics as well as the semi-wild rearing in Russia, they encounter strangers with suspicion. A new caregiver must first earn the Budjonny's trust and cooperation . A form of keeping with large, year-round exercise opportunities accommodates the Budjonny's urge to move and is unproblematic due to its robustness.

Breeding history

Marshal Semyon Mikhailovich Budyonny founded the breed as a cavalry horse in the 1920s . He crossed Don horses and English thoroughbreds . The aim of breeding was a rideable, fast horse that could live in herds all year round in the steppe. In 1948 the breed was officially recognized. Formerly used mainly as a riding horse in the army, Budjonnys are now a widespread breed in Russia. They are used in particular for jumping tournaments that are very popular. They are also successful in horse races, the notorious Pardubice steeplechase was already won by Budjonnys. Within the breed , there is now one breeding line for races and one for tournaments, the future breeding horses are tested in their respective disciplines. The largest and best-known studs for Budjonny are the Budjonny stud and the stud of the 1st Cavalry Army ("Pervaja Konnaja Armija"), which are located in the Salian steppes south of the city of Rostov-on-Don .

The Budjonny is marked with a cold brand : on the hind leg the stud mark , in the saddle position the year of birth and foal number.
