The S3 Thunderbolt is a motorcycle category Sports Tourer the Buell Motorcycle Company .
General
The most important features are a sporty chassis with tubular space frame and upside-down fork , a performance-enhanced 1,199 cm³ Sportster engine from Harley-Davidson and the toothed belt drive . There is also a classic half-shell cladding. The result is a motorcycle that can be moved very quickly and is sufficiently comfortable with a relatively low overall weight.
The vehicle was presented to the public in 1996 and came to German dealers from the beginning with the 1997 model year. In contrast to the radical model Buell S1 Lightning , the Thunderbolt was denied even modest success, at least in Germany itself. The S3 was produced until the end of 2001 (model year 2002) and can therefore be described as the longest-built Buell model up to that point, but the S3 was last offered in Germany in model year 1999.
The Buell S3T Thunderbolt (the "T" stands for Touring) was the manufacturer's top model during its entire construction period - both in terms of retail price and standard equipment. It differs from the technically identical Buell S3 Thunderbolt in that it is equipped with additional features with added touring comfort thanks to a hard case, leg shields and several textile bags.
In the meantime, some S3 have been converted into the sought-after S1. In addition to the add-on parts, the main technical difference between the two models is the lower footrests and the longer rear frame of the S3. A largely original Buell S3 or even S3T from the first years of construction can only be found very rarely. The later model years (from 1999) are an alternative: In the USA and Canada there are isolated vehicles with an injection pump instead of the previously proven carburetor.
technology
The S3 is powered by a V2 gasoline engine with a displacement of 1200 cm 3 . From the 1999 model year, the intake manifold injection of the X1 Lightning was also used here, before that a classic carburetor . In the same year, the steel box swing arm used up to now was replaced by the aluminum swing arm of the X1. The strut for the rear suspension is located to the right of the rear silencer under the engine and is subjected to unusual tensile loads.
The tank of S3 / S3T consists of plastic , the front and rear cladding GRP .
