Bufonia stricta is a species of the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).

description

Bufonia stricta is a perennial subshrub that reaches heights of 3.5 to 5 centimeters. The base of the flower stalks is woody, upright, curved, thin and mostly unbranched. Non-flowering shoots are also present during the flowering period. The basal leaves are bristly. The stem leaves are sub-like and often pressed. The outer sepals are 3.5 to 4 millimeters in size, three to five nerves and as long as the crown . The seeds have smooth sides and bumpy edges.

The flowering period extends from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

Bufonia stricta occurs on limestone and dolomite rubble in the Peloponnese and the South Aegean Sea in the subalpine altitude range .

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Bufonia stricta subsp. stricta :

The nominate form Bufonia stricta subsp. stricta occurs in the Peloponnese and the islands of the southern Aegean in the subalpine altitude range. In Crete it grows in the Lefka Ori , in the Dikti Mountains and in the Afendis Kavousi at altitudes of mostly 1150 to 135 meters, it is rarely found above 600 meters. The plant is green. There is a single terminal flower on the stem and 0 to 5 (rarely up to 9) single-flowered, short side branches. The whole thing resembles a one-sided ear. The stem leaves soon turn yellow. The upper and middle stem leaves have a wide skin margin and gradually narrow into a long, straight tip. Non-flowering shoots are found on the lower nodes.

  • Bufonia stricta subsp. cecconiana (Soon.) Rech.f.

This subspecies is in Crete in Ida - and Dikti mountains endemic , where it grows at altitudes from 1,700 to 2,450 meters. The plant is gray-green. The side branches of the middle and upper nodes sometimes have two, sometimes even more flowers. The top of these flowers towers above the terminal flower. The leaves turn yellow at the same time as the stem. The upper and middle stalk leaves have a narrow skin edge and suddenly contract into a short, curled tip. There are non-flowering shoots on the lower nodes.

There are transitions between the two subspecies.

Taxonomy

Bufonia stricta was created by Sir James Edward Smith in Sibth. & Sm., Fl. Graec. Prodr. 1: 264, first described as Moehringia stricta in 1809 . The species was placed by Robert Louis August Maximilian Gürke in K. Richt., Pl. Eur. 2: 247, 1899 as Bufonia stricta (Sm.) Gürke in the genus Bufonia . A synonym is Bufonia brachyphylla Boiss. & Hero. nom. illegal.

The generic name Bufonia honors Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), a French naturalist.
