background

The backstory revolves around the title character Bug !, a famous Hollywood star who wants to celebrate his biggest breakthrough. Players take control shortly after Bug! signed a contract for a title role in an action film in which his girlfriend was kidnapped by Queen Cadavra and he moves out to save her. The gameplay takes place on the film set of each scene and cutscenes between the levels show how Bug! got from one movie set to another.

Course of the game

Bug! as a traditional side-scroller - Adventure play game. In the same way as in Sonic the Hedgehog (having to race against the bug! In one of the bonus levels), Bug hops! through extensive levels and collect power-ups , stabbing the heads of his enemies to fight them. The specialty of Bug! are the 3D levels which are taken from the side view and which change them. Bug! can walk up sideways on vertical surfaces and even walk upside down. Each level set , which ranges from bright green grass to deep red desert levels, has an individual look and feel .

reception

Bug! was well received by the game critics. The Game Informer magazine awarded an "excellent" rating of 9 out of 10, as well as Electric Playground and Electronic Gaming Monthly , there was 8 of 10. The Sega Saturn Magazine distributed 5 of 5 stars and praised the scope of the game, the high degree of difficulty and the amazing graphics. However, the game from Next Generation received only 3 out of 5 stars, although it was criticized that the game "converted the 2D gameplay directly to 3D." GameSpot rated the PC version with 6 out of 10 points, calling it "visually amazing" and praised the "fast and responsive" gameplay, but criticized the fact that the game "does not explore new territory in a tired genre [...]".
