Ettore Bugatti with the Type 2

The Bugatti Type 2 was a test and racing car that the designer Ettore Bugatti developed in 1900 and completed in 1901.

description

As an apprentice, Bugatti had built his first automobile for the Italian bicycle manufacturer Prinetti & Stucchi and drove it successfully in races. Although some three- and four-wheeled automobiles of idiosyncratic design were built in this company, the owners could not make up their minds to enter the automobile business entirely. Therefore, Bugatti left the manufacturer in 1900. Family friends, the Gulinelli brothers , then funded the development of a more advanced design.

This Type 2 had a ladder frame and a four-cylinder engine at the front . The cylinders were cast in pairs in accordance with the state of the art in casting. They each had two valves. The bore of 90 mm and the stroke of 120 mm resulted in the displacement of 3050 cm³. The vehicle had the usual right-hand drive and chain drive.

It is not known where Bugatti built the car. He presumably commissioned individual components from small businesses in the Turin and Milan region .

The result was literally impressive : when he showed it at the International Exhibition in Milan in 1901 , it not only attracted considerable attention, but also won one of the fair's “Grand Prizes”. This, in turn, was noticed by the industrialist Eugène de Dietrich , who secured Ettore Bugatti's talent as a designer. Later Bugatti designs for De Dietrich , Hermes-Simplex and Deutz use type 2 construction elements. Bugatti only abandoned the massive construction of his designs with the Voiturette Type 10 , which was created almost ten years later.
