Buin is a city in the middle of the South American Andean state of Chile . It is located in the Metropolitana region . It has 96,614 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geography and climate
The city is located about 40 km south of Santiago de Chile on the Panamericana . It belongs to Maipo Province . The Maipo River flows north of the city .
history
The area around Buin was populated very early. To the north of the city is the Inca fortress Pucará de Chena from the 15th century. The first Spaniards came to the area around Santiago de Chile with Pedro de Valdivia as early as 1541 .
In the vicinity of the city lies the plain where the Battle of Maipú took place on April 5, 1818 , where the Chileans under Bernardo O'Higgins defeated the Spaniards. This established the independence of Chile.
economy
Buin is a modern industrial city and a service center. The surrounding area is characterized by agriculture, mainly viticulture and fruit growing .
tourism
The main sights are the Río Maipo and the old Inca fortresses as well as the wine-growing areas. There are ski resorts in the Andes east of the city.
