The Bucharest Stock Exchange (Romanian: Bursa de Valori București ) is a securities exchange based in Bucharest , the capital of Romania . The stock exchange maintains close cooperation with the Vienna Stock Exchange ; both share systems and infrastructures, among other things.

history

The beginnings of the Bucharest Stock Exchange go back to 1882 when an exchange was established by the Bucharest Chamber of Commerce. At that time there were 21 securities , including 6 shares and the stock market has also been used for the trading of other simple financial services.

Trading activity was relatively low until trading ceased in 1916, the year of Romania's entry into World War I. After the war, the stock market reopened, and trade and market capitalization rose rapidly. The strong growth was only supported by transport and banking stocks, and from 1925 by stocks in oil companies, which accounted for more than 75% of trading turnover.

With the onset of the Great Depression in 1929 , stocks fell sharply and reached their lowest level in 1932. From 1933 the stock market recovered and in 1939 reached the highest level of the interwar period in terms of prices and trading volume. During the Second World War , the stock exchange remained open and sales even increased.

When the Communist Party came to power in Romania in 1945 , the entire financial sector was nationalized and the stock exchange system was abolished.

On April 21, 1995, the exchange was re-established in the Bank of Romania building .
