Bummelkasten is a Berlin one-man band specializing in children's music. Bummelkasten's first album Irgendwas specifics (2017) with a cappella songs was a particular success with both critics and audiences.

history

The only member of the band is Bernhard Lütke, who was previously involved in comedy, film and theater projects as an actor. He belongs to the Berlin artist group Karmanoia . For his children's music project Bummelkasten, Lütke creates all the instruments with his mouth and mixes them on the computer to create a soundscape for his singing. He also works with a loop station when performing live . Bummelkasten's art is based on a "playful attitude" according to its own statement. In fact, despite being limited in time to the standard length of pop songs, the songs appear like small theater pieces : rich in voices and noises, with changing musical and vocal styles.

Bummelkasten brought his first self-produced song with a minimal budget to the children's radio station KiRaKa in 2012 , where it quickly became the most popular song. This was followed by the project of an annually repeated “Advent strolling box” on YouTube , which from the end of 2012 attracted increasing attention to the work of the a cappella artist as well as single releases. In 2015, the music video for the single Weil ick mich so happy was awarded the Golden Sparrow . Bummelkasten's debut album Something Certain was finally released in 2017 by the renowned children's book publisher Oetinger Media, initially on CD and as a download and, after high sales, as a Tonie figure . The associated music videos on YouTube have been viewed millions of times.

Bummelkasten recently appeared with his stage show at national music festivals such as Juicy Beats , for Das Erste at IFA or independent concerts such as 2019 at Scala Ludwigsburg . His songs are now sometimes played on the radio outside of children's radio.

reception

For the Berliner Tagesspiegel , Bummelkasten “explores not only journeys into the child's imagination, but also the accident zones between the world of children and adults” and adults and children alike would be enthusiastic about this music. The Süddeutsche Zeitung cites the project as an example of “children's music with humor and contemporary sound”. Die Welt emphasizes Bummelkasten in their article “Why does music have to be so idiotic for children?” As a “laudable exception”. In a positive review, the radio station 1 / DEUTSCH found it difficult to distinguish whether the Bummelkasten is actually “children's music or fun pop”. Due to the low production costs and unusual distribution channels, among other things, the question is also raised: "Aren't Bummelkasten trendsetters of a changing music industry?" In a concert review on September 17, 2018, the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung noted a peculiarity of the project that broke boundaries: "Bummelkasten (...) knows how to write songs for children and to perform them in changing roles that adults can also relate to. Beyond ambitious songwriting with an educational mandate, but also dull, meaningless and interchangeable party music for children's birthday parties, Bummelkasten showed that there is also a third way. In November 2017, the magazine Familie & Co classified “his pieces” on the CD Something Specific as “unique and funny”.
