The Federation for German Writing and Language ( BfdS ) is a language association which, according to its own definition, is dedicated to the maintenance and preservation of German scripts and the German language as a cultural asset.

history

In 1918 the association was founded as the "Bund für deutsche Schrift". He immediately introduced his own club magazine. In 1922 and 1923 the publication of the magazine was interrupted; In 1927 it received its current title Die deutsche Schrift . Predecessor associations, which in 1918 were absorbed into the Federation for German Writing, were, among others, the Writing Association of German University Teachers eV and the Association of Friends of German Writing eV

The Bund für deutsche Schrift already presented itself as a non-political organization during the Weimar Republic. Nevertheless, a national-conservative sentiment can be read from his publications during the Nazi era. The NSDAP was seen as the problem solver of the written question .

The association and the magazine were dissolved in 1941 after the National Socialist dictatorship's ban on Fraktur, which was surprising for the association . The German scripts were banned and Antiqua was generally introduced as a so-called normal script .

In 1951 the federal government resumed its activities, and in 1951 the magazine “Die deutsche Schrift” was published again, which has been published quarterly since 1984.

In 1989 the name of the association was changed to "Bund für deutsche Schrift und Sprache".

Since 1998 the federal government has had the status of a registered association (eV) and is recognized as a non-profit organization.

The original logo of the federal government was designed around 1927 by the Berlin commercial artist Georg Wagner and showed the Fraktur letters B, f, D and S on a black background. The S-cap of the font Manuskript-Gotisch in the color HKS 33 (violet) has been used as the logo since 1982. The covenant states that this symbol "is probably the most splendid letter that we have in all of our publications, a royal figure with a scepter and a wide-swept cloak".

German Script Foundation

The BfdS has been managing a special fund since 1993 in the “Stiftung Deutsche Schrift”. The purpose of the foundation is the "preservation, promotion and dissemination" of the broken fonts:

  1. Fonts: Gotisch , Schwabacher , Fraktur ;
  2. Script fonts : German Kurrent script , Sütterlin script , Offenbach script

The foundation awards prizes for typographical work that is exclusively or predominantly designed in these fonts.

position

Federal publications are essentially politically neutral, but often have a nationalistic tenor. They deal with the German written and language culture (in the form of language maintenance and language criticism ), also in the context of developments and difficulties in other cultures and peoples.

The BfdS is critical of the spelling reform of 1996 and calls it an "attack on the German language". In connection with the controversial spelling reform, the publications relate u. a. on the work of the reform opponent Theodor Ickler .

activities

The federal government is also represented with a stand at annual events such as the Leipzig Book Fair , where it exhibits works in Fraktur about the history of writing or typography. The federal government has also been present several times at the Sudeten German Day .

criticism

The club is assigned to the strongly right-wing conservative spectrum. Therefore, the classification as “non-profit” is clearly criticized. Mention was also made of an overlap with the right-wing extremist Weltanschauungsgemeinschaft Bund für Gotterwissennis .
