from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of Active Old Town Friends was a citizens' initiative founded in 1922 by the art historian Fried Lübbecke with the purpose of promoting the old town of Frankfurt am Main in every way in social, hygienic and artistic areas . From 1966 the association was re-established as Friends of Frankfurt .

background

The medieval old town was the end of the 19th century became the former city center in a residential area in need of rehabilitation of the poorer sections of the population. Its numerous art monuments were threatened by decay and massive interventions in the historical building fabric, for example in the context of road openings such as that of Braubachstrasse . After the First World War , plans were drawn up to demolish large parts of the old town.

Lübbecke turned against this. When the association was founded on April 13, 1922, he defined the goal of turning residents into citizens whose hometown means a home again ... The plan is not only to protect the old town and its beauties, but also to improve living conditions in this district .

In addition to beautification measures such as the renovation of fountains and the installation of flower boxes, the association had numerous old town buildings renovated from 1926 onwards. The measures ranged from painting the facade to exposing plastered frameworks to complete renovation, as in the case of the gothic Fürsteneck patrician house in Fahrgasse .

As a result of the initiative, the old town returned to the consciousness of the city and its citizens as Gut ′ Stubb . The ongoing renovation and the annual Römerberg Festival from 1932 onwards made the old town a tourist attraction in the 1930s.

The architectural and art-historical documentation of numerous old town buildings, begun on the initiative of the association, as well as the construction of the Treuner old town model , after the destruction of the old town in the bombing of 1944, helped to preserve the memory of the submerged old town after the Second World War .

Friends of Frankfurt

After the death of the old town father Lübbecke in 1965, the association could not continue in its previous form. In 1966, the journalist Heinrich Heym ensured the re-establishment of the association with new statutes and under the new name Friends of Frankfurt - Association for the Maintenance of Frankfurt Tradition . From 1980 the managing director was the Frankfurt historian Hans-Otto Schembs .

Frank Albrecht has been the association's 1st chairman since 2011 , while Barbara Deppert-Lippitz is in charge of the management.
