Bundaberg Volcanic Province

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bundaberg Volcanic Province , also known as Bundaberg Volcano , is a geological province that was formed over a period of 64 million years. The volcanic area is in the Bundaberg and Childers area in Queensland , Australia . The volcanic fields were created by lava emerging from rock crevices .

The province is made up of four volcanic fields , which are differentiated according to their age and chemical composition, Gin Gin Volcanic Field , Childers Volcanic Field , Stony Range Volcanic and The Hummock Volcanic Field . The last volcanic eruption occurred 900,000 years ago.

The Gin Gin Volcanic Field originated from the Late Cretaceous to the early Eocene , and the Childers Volcanic Field followed 20 million years later. During the late Miocene to the late Pliocene , a volcanic field, the Stony Range Volcanic , was formed, measuring 18 km × 50 km. The Hummock Volcanic Field originated in the Pleistocene .

The rocks of this volcanic complex are basalts , rocks that contain nepheline and basanites .

Volcanic extensions of this area have been drilled below the northern tip of Fraser Island at a depth of 421 to 592 meters. The Mount Le Brun is a 330-meter-high volcano crater of the area which consists of basalt and volcanic bombs is composed of two and wares there.

The Bundaberg Volcanic Province is considered the most earthquake-prone area in Australia.
