The Federal Office for Information Technology and Telecommunications BIT ( French Office fédéral de l'informatique et de la télécommunication OFIT , Italian Ufficio federale dell'informatica e della telecomunicazione UFIT , Romansh Uffizi federal d'informatica e da telecommunicaziun UFIT ) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation . It is a federal office of the federal administration of Switzerland subordinate to the Federal Department of Finance (FDF) . The name Federal Office of Information Technology, Systems and Telecommunication (FOITT) is officially given in English .

Field of activity

The FOITT was created on July 1, 1999 from what was then the Federal Office for Information Technology and was brought into being as a result of a reorganization in view of the rapid development of information technology; today 1,100 employees work there.

The FOITT is active in the four strategic business areas of IT consulting, IT solutions, IT infrastructure and IT education and provides a wide range of services in the areas of Internet , SAP , operational security, telecommunications , etc. Like most of the federal offices of the Swiss Confederation BIT also via an internal legal service (Legal Services BIT). Its task is to provide legal support for all business and activity areas of the FOITT. The legal areas of Legal Services BIT include IT contract law (contracts for work and services , orders, sales contracts, service contracts), public procurement law (purchasing goods and services, especially in the IT sector), federal personnel law, IT data protection law , information protection law , legal compliance, etc. .

Since March 2, 2020, the FOITT has been operating the civil area of ​​the RZ Frauenfeld ( federal computer center ), which is operated jointly with the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport . The property was built by Armasuisse . Among other things, the FOITT operates servers of the Federal Department of Justice and Police in the new data center .

Organizationally affiliated with the Federal Department of Finance, the headquarters of the FOITT is located in the city of Bern in the administrative building known as "Titanic II" on Monbijoustrasse. A few years ago, the FOITT still had seven branch offices, including one computer center . In addition to four other locations in the city of Bern, there was one branch each in Köniz and Geneva . With the new building in Zollikofen , the number of locations could be reduced to two.
