The Federal Office of Communications OFCOM ( French Office fédéral de la communication OFCOM , Italian Ufficio federale delle comunicazioni UFCOM , English Federal Office of Communications ) is a federal authority of the Swiss Confederation . The seat is in Biel / Bienne BE. The Federal Office deals with the telecommunications market , broadcasting and the postal system in Switzerland. In this context, the office regulates, among other things, the radio system , the telecommunications systems, the radio and television broadcasters and oversees the basic supply of the postal service for payment transactions.

The Federal Office was founded in 1992 as part of the Federal Department for the Environment, Transport and Communication DETEC .

In the telecommunications sector, OFCOM issues, among other things, national telephone prefixes and value-added service numbers , supervises telecommunications service providers and creates the basis for basic services for the Swiss population. The newly revised postal legislation came into force on October 1, 2012. As a result, OFCOM was assigned new tasks in the postal sector. The authority represents Switzerland's interests in international bodies - for example in the international telecommunications union and the Council of Europe .
