The Federal Railway Administration Act (Bundesbahnverkehrsverwaltungsgesetz - BEVVG) of December 27, 1993 came into force as Article 3 of the Railway Reorganization Act on January 1, 1994.
It deals with the establishment of the Federal Railway Authority . As a higher federal authority , the sovereign tasks that have been fulfilled up to then in the special assets " Deutsche Bundesbahn " and " Deutsche Reichsbahn " are fulfilled. The Federal Railway Authority's supervisory and licensing authority for the federal railways and the railway companies with headquarters abroad to the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany .
The Federal Railway Authority has the following tasks:
- the planning approval for operating facilities of the federal railways
- the railway supervision
- the construction supervision for operating facilities of the federal railways
- Granting and revocation of an operating license
- the exercise of sovereign powers as well as supervisory and participation rights in accordance with other laws and ordinances
- the preparation and implementation of agreements in accordance with Section 9 of the Federal Rail Infrastructure Act
- the technical investigation of dangerous events in railway operations
- the approval of federal funds to promote rail transport and to promote the combination of rail transport with other modes of transport.
For the monitoring of access to railway infrastructure since 1 January 2006, is the Federal Network Agency for Electricity, Gas, Telecommunications, Post and Railway responsible. The Railway Regulation Act was enacted for this purpose.
