Confederate War (Attic Seebund)
The alliance war was in the years 357 to 355 BC. BC led by Athens with his Second Attic League against the cities of Chios , Rhodes and Kos, which were previously part of the League, as well as the independent Byzantium . The war ended with the defeat of Athens and the independence of the opposing cities.
course
Tired of the injustices of Athens and the blackmailing of the Athenian mercenaries, Chios, Kos, Rhodes and Byzantium, irritated by the Thebans , fell away from Athens in order to make themselves independent of Caria with the help of the Persian liege prince Mausolos . The struggle began very unhappily for the Athenians, with their general Chabrias losing the battle and life at Chios, a loss all the more serious when soon afterwards the two other capable generals of Athens, Iphicrates and Timotheus , responded to those of their colleague Chares for treason and bribery they were dismissed on charges brought. Then, in the course of the war, the Persians made preparations to support the allies, and since the Athenians were also threatened by the advance of Philip of Macedonia in the north, they felt compelled to recognize the independence of the apostate allies, which for their political position and Athens' finances took a hard blow.
