The Federal Law Gazette of the German Confederation emerged from the Federal Law Gazette of the North German Confederation on January 27, 1871 and continues its numbering and page counting.

The last edition of the Federal Law Gazette of the North German Confederation is No. 3 from January 20, 1871, the last page number is 6, the last publication No. 606 . The Federal Law Gazette of the German Confederation continues with issue number 4/1871 and begins with page 7 and publication no. 607 . This first edition of the Federal Law Gazette of the German Confederation appeared on January 27, 1867.

The name change had become necessary because on January 1, 1871 the “ Constitution of the German Confederation ” came into force. However, it already gave the state the name " German Empire ". This state should not be confused with the German Confederation from 1815–1866 .

The last edition was No. 18/1871 of April 29, 1871. It was published on May 2, 1871 and ends with (blank) page 94.

On May 8, 1871, due to the new constitution of April 16, 1871 , which came into force on May 4, the title was changed to Reichsgesetzblatt and the consecutive numbering of the issues and the counting of the pages were continued. The first edition of the Reichsgesetzblatt bears the number 19 and begins with page number 95.
