The Federal Office for Information Technology ( BIT for short ) was a department of the Federal Administration Office in Cologne (Riehl). It was an interdepartmental IT service provider belonging to the department of the Federal Ministry of the Interior . The federal agency was set up on January 1, 2006 as a result of the BundOnline 2005 e-government initiative and transferred to the Federal Information Technology Center (ITZBund) at the end of December 31, 2015 .

General

The BIT supported federal authorities with a service and product portfolio for IT tasks. The tasks included IT consulting , project management , software development , operation , hosting and - as cross-sectional tasks with effects beyond administration - also the operation of competence centers as well as the development of standards and methods in information technology.

BIT made its services available to a customer authority upon request. In accordance with the law, only federal authorities whose grant recipients and federal institutions are allowed to be served by federal service providers. Authorities of the federal states , municipalities and intergovernmental organizations as well as all free trade and non-governmental organizations are excluded from this unless there is a separate contractual arrangement between the federal government and the customer (e.g. Kiel resolutions of the KoopA ADV ).

Some BIT products are still available to the public free of charge and some of them are open-source and are therefore also used in some companies in the private sector.

Federal service center

The federal administration has increasingly transferred IT services to a few service centers that are particularly suitable for these tasks. The Federal Commissioner of the Federal Government for Information Technology has designated end of 2009, the first IT service centers for the federal government. On January 1, 2016, all remaining IT service centers were finally transferred to the ITZBund.

The Federal Office for Information Technology (BIT) in the Federal Office of Administration (BVA) was one of these IT service centers. Until it was dissolved, it worked together with the Administrative Service Center (VSZ) and the General Service Center (DLZ) under the umbrella of the Federal Administration Office. A broad spectrum of IT and administrative services was thus offered by one authority with the aim of ensuring that the solutions and services for administrative modernization are particularly practical.
