IT consultants (also IT consultants , EDP consultants or with additional IT senior consultants and IT junior consultants ) advise companies or project groups on the introduction, maintenance and further development of IT systems.

The term IT consultant is a very broad job title . As a service occupation, it is located at the intersection of engineering IT occupations and classic (management or) business consulting .
In general, a broad knowledge of computer science , in particular software technology, as well as knowledge of business administration are required for a job as an IT consultant. Building on this basic qualification, most IT consultants are specialized in their field and focus on one or a few subject areas, such as: For example, the requirements analysis ( Requirements Engineering ) for Business Information Systems , the safety analysis of IT systems or asset management . The projects in which IT consultants are active can be of very different nature: They range from the development of a suitable corporate strategy to the technical implementation and implementation of individual software components. Job title
The job title IT consultant is not a protected term under German law, and a formal proof of qualification does not have to be provided in order to start working as an IT consultant.
But since 2002 there is a legally protected job title Certified IT Consultants (Certified IT Business Consultant) as a further education qualification under the Vocational Training Act (Vocational Training Act).

Qualification measures
Until 2002 there were no independent courses of study or vocational training that led directly to the job description of IT consultants , which is why the IT consultants working in Germany have relatively different professional backgrounds and careers.
The classic qualification measure for a later job as an IT consultant (especially in large consulting and system houses) is a university degree, typically in computer science , business informatics or a related subject.
The University of Hamburg offers since the winter semester 2010/2011 with the consecutive master's program IT management and consulting for the first time in Germany a specific university training path for IT consultants to. Since the summer semester of 2007, a consecutive Master’s degree in Information Management and Consulting (M.Sc.) has been offered at the Ludwigshafen University of Applied Sciences .
In addition, the certified IT consultant has also existed since 2002 within the framework of the state IT advanced training regulations. The so-called "Operative Professionals" are divided into four different profiles: Certified IT Systems Manager (Certified IT Developer), Certified IT Business Manager (Certified IT Project Manager), Certified IT Business Consultant (Certified IT Consultant) and Certified IT Marketing Manager (certified IT economist).
As part of this part-time training, a total of seven exams must be taken and a practical work done. The prerequisite for admission to the exam is proof of qualification as a certified specialist or a corresponding qualification. The exams are usually taken at the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce .
These degrees correspond roughly to the ' industrial master ' in the commercial and manual professions.
