The coleus ( Solenostemon scutellarioides , Syn. : Plectranthus scutellarioides , Coleus blumei ) is a plant from the family of the mint (Lamiaceae).

features

The colored nettle is a perennial, herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters. The leaves are herbaceous, the stems lignified from below. The upper calyx lobes of the flowers are erect and broadly ovate. The lateral calyx lobes are shorter than the upper, egg-shaped, semicircular and blunt. The lateral calyx lobes are narrow triangular. The corolla tube is kneeled. The crown upper lip is two to four lobes. The crown lower lip is boat-shaped. The sap gives off a pleasant, fresh smell if the leaves or stems are damaged.

The flowering period extends from June to October. The plant is particularly sensitive to frost and stops growing below approx. 7 degrees Celsius.

Dissemination and use

The colored nettle occurs wildly from tropical and subtropical Asia to northern Australia on river banks, in fields and in forests. It is used as a houseplant and also outdoors as an ornamental plant for summer borders. The species is cultivated as an annual and has been in culture since at least 1851.
