Bure is an area around the village of Bure. The area is on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea , about 70 kilometers southwest of the port city of Assab (Eritrea). Eritrea considered the area as part of its Debubawi Kayih Bahri region , Ethiopia counts it as part of its Awsi Rasu zone in the Afar region . The Awash-Assab Highway, which is considered an important trade route, runs through the area.

Current situation

In 2002, the Hague Border Commission came to the conclusion that Bure was part of Ethiopia. Nevertheless, the situation on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea remained tense, which is why United Nations peacekeeping forces were stationed in Bure.

Other controversial areas along the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia were Tsorona and Zalambessa and, until June 2018, Badme . A peace treaty was signed between the two countries on July 9, 2018 .
