Tsorona and Zalambessa are two formerly controversial small areas on the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea . Tsorona (location ) is 23 km northwest of the larger village of Zalambessa. Eritrea claimed both as part of its Debub region in the south of the country, while Ethiopia counted the villages as part of its Misraqawi zone , which lies in the east of the Tigray region .
On June 5, 2018, the Ethiopian government declared that it was ready to accept the provisions of the 2002 border agreement and to implement them. This made Tsorona an Eritrean city and Zalambessa an Ethiopian city.
Other controversial areas along the border between Eritrea and Ethiopia were Bure (Ethiopia) and Badme (Eritrea) until June 2018 . A peace treaty was signed between the two countries on July 9, 2018 .
