The castle Sachsensteinblick ( Slovak Šášovský hrad ) is the ruins of a hilltop castle above the river Hron (German: Gran ) above the village Šášovské Podhradie , a local part of the city Žiar nad Hronom (Holy Cross at the Gran) .
history
There is no written source of the origin of the castle. It is believed that the location of the castle is related to the defense of the mining towns in the area, as there was a connection between the mining towns of Kremnitz and Schemnitz below the castle . Together with Scharnowitz Castle , which is 15 kilometers further south on the other bank of the Gran, the castle protected the passage and the path to the mining area. The name of the castle refers to the settlement of Saxon colonists in these towns Sachsenstein Castle was destroyed by soldiers under Emmerich Thököly in 1577 during the uprising against the Habsburg government and was never restored.
description
In the long narrow inner courtyard of the castle there were residential buildings, at the end of the plateau the palas , which was secured by a triangular triangular tower. The upper castle was closed off by a round bastion and the entrance to the upper castle was thus protected. The courtyard in front of the bastion was lined with residential buildings and at the end was a round watchtower. Today the ruin focuses on the elongated inner castle. In front of her is a driveway to the castle, which led through a fortified pretext with a small bastion, of which little has survived.
Access
From Šášovské Podhradie, a green marked path leads to the castle in about 15 minutes. Parking is possible directly under the castle rock or by the stream. From the castle you can continue to hike to Suť, from there steeply down into the Močiarska dolina (German valley of Močiar ) and further over the Demian mountain to Bresnitz on the Gran.
