The castle Affenstein even Arvenstein called, is a Outbound hilltop castle at 685.1 m above sea level. NHN on the Lower Argen, northwest of the Göttlishofen part of the municipality of Argenbühl in the Ravensburg district ( Baden-Württemberg ).
The castle complex was built by the Lords of Affenstein, they were first mentioned in 1278. The castle name Affenstein is supposed to be derived from Arvenstein , according to Merkt , where Arve stands for the yew tree species . The Affensteiner coat of arms , on the other hand, shows a monkey . The castle site probably slipped partially into the Argen during the floods in 1789. The castle consisted only of a round tower with an angular surrounding wall, as can be seen from a map of the Mappa Trauchburg from 1716. An associated building yard stood below the castle on the banks of the Argen; the fence mill to the east was once the castle mill. A memorial stone for local history researcher Otto Merkt was set up on the castle grounds .
