Alt-Lichtenstein Castle

The Alt-Lichtenstein Castle , also called Alter Lichtenstein , is the ruin of a spur castle near the municipality of Lichtenstein in the Reutlingen district in Baden-Württemberg .

Geographical location

The ruins of Alt-Lichtenstein Castle are located on a steep rock spur of the Swabian Alb at 800 meters above sea level on the same steep slope as 500 meters further north-west of the “fairytale castle of Württemberg” Lichtenstein Castle above the Honau district of the Lichtenstein community.

history

Alter Lichtenstein Castle was built between 1150 and 1200. This probably happened under Gebhard von Lichtenstein, a member of the noble family of Lichtenstein. The castle complex was destroyed twice, the first time in 1311 by the Reutlingers in the Imperial War against Count Eberhard I of Württemberg. In 1315 it was rebuilt after the peace agreement. The second destruction took place between 1377 and 1381 by the imperial city of Reutlingen in the Swabian city war . The castle ruins fell to Württemberg in 1389 as a "dilapidated property" and were not rebuilt. Instead, a new castle was built nearby on the site of the later Lichtenstein Castle. The Lichtenstein family died out in 1687. The walls of Alt-Lichtenstein Castle were uncovered in the 1990s and can be viewed since then.

investment

Only remains of the former castle are visible. The entire complex is divided into a bailey and a smaller core bailey. There are only small remains of the wall, especially parts of the keep and a wall that separated the inner castle. Furthermore, a cistern and small remains of stone stairs can be seen. The exact function of foundation walls can only be seen on site.
