Cournanel Castle

The Cournanel Castle ( French Château de Cournanel , also: Château des évêques d'Alet , German: Castle of the Bishops of Alet) is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle in Cournanel in the Aude department . The ruin rises on a rock spur, around which today's town has developed. It was classified as a Monument historique in 1948.

history

Cournanel was mentioned for the first time in 889, a castle ( castrum ) in 1119. The extensive ruins that are preserved today are attributed to the 14th century, not the 12th, by the French monuments administration. However, the Romanesque church of St-Etienne , located to the west below the castle, dates back to the 12th century and originally served as the castle chapel . Cournanel was owned by the Benedictine Abbey of Alet . The abbots of the abbey had been bishops of the newly established diocese of Alet since 1318 . The preserved castle complex was probably built in place of an older complex for their needs after the abbots had been elevated to the status of bishops of Alet. The castle was built as a polygon with eight sides. Square towers still rise on four of the sides. The interior of the facility is almost completely destroyed. From the episcopal mansion, which is dated to the 16th century, a wall has been preserved that borders the west gate.
