Frauenstein Castle

The Castle Frauenstein is an Outbound rock castle on a dolomite rock , the "woman stone cliff" between the place Scharzfeld and the city of Bad Lauterberg in the Harz Mountains in the district of Göttingen ( Lower Saxony ).

Frauenstein Castle served as an observation post on the strategically favorable rock as additional protection for Scharzfels Castle , located about 300 meters to the south-west . Beam supports and old traces of processing, as well as ceramic remains from the 14th century, show that it was used in the Middle Ages. In the course of the Thirty Years' War , the Frauenstein cliff was expanded to a fortress, occupying the entire dome, on an area of around 25 by 30 meters. During the Seven Years' War , French troops first captured the Frauenstein in 1761. After shelling from here, Scharzfels Castle surrendered on September 25, 1761 and Frauenstein Castle was blown up by the French troops. Drilled holes were found in the rock from the blasting work.

Today's castle stable only shows the remains of the moat , the rampart and parts of the castle cellar.
