The castle Guémar , even since the 15th century whey Burg called, was a water castle and later chateau in Alsace Guémar between Colmar and Sélestat . Its strategic importance on the border between the spheres of power of the Habsburgs and the bishops of Strasbourg is reflected in the eventful history. It was on the southwest corner of the medieval city wall. Today the Rue du Château still reminds of the castle, which leads directly to the castle site.

history

Rudolf von Habsburg had a first wooden castle built for the Lords of Rappoltstein in 1287 , which was replaced by a stone castellum in 1291 . This was destroyed in 1293 by Adolf von Nassau in the fight against Albrecht von Habsburg and again in 1298, officially designated as castrum Gemer. At the end of the 14th century, the castle was a bone of contention between the Rappoltsteiners and the bishops of Strasbourg . A wooden siege castle , called castris ante Gemer, has come down to us from 1396 . There is also evidence for this year that the city of Basel apologized to the Strasbourgers for not being able to deliver a large cannon called a “rifle”. The dispute culminated in 1400 with the destruction of the castle by the Strasbourgers. Egenolf von Rappoltstein had it rebuilt in 1580 as a defensive Renaissance castle, as shown in the view of Merian . The castle was damaged in the chaos of war in 1635 and 1675. It was finally demolished between 1785 and 1788.

Ruins of the castle in the 18th century

The castle was integrated into the city fortifications . It was protected from the south and west by the moat . A plan from the 18th century, which is not exactly dated, shows an irregular, almost pentagonal complex with round corner towers , the outer towers of which also served as part of the city wall. The still-preserved city wall towers on the south and west sides were also corner towers of the castle walls. The main castle was, if you can trust the cityscape of Merian, on the south side. Accordingly, it was almost square and flanked by two mighty towers, as the plan from the 18th century shows. One of the towers can still be seen in François Walter's view from 1785, when the castle was already in ruins. According to aerial photos, however, the floor plan was rather diamond-shaped. The site is still vacant today. To the north there was a bailey , in the area of which there is now a fountain . To the east of the main castle were at right-angled farm buildings, the core of which is still preserved and can be seen in aerial photos.
