Koberstein Castle

The castle Koberstein is an Outbound castle in the municipality Obererbach (Westerwald) in the district of Altenkirchen in Rhineland-Palatinate .

location

Koberstein Castle was located in the valley floor on the course of the Erbach brook in the Niedererbach district, southeast of the Alt-Koberstein farm . The city of Altenkirchen is a few kilometers away.

history

Koberstein Castle was built between 1343 and 1358 by the knight Johann von Kobern, who later named himself Johann von Koberstein after his castle. The castle was first evidently mentioned in 1358 in two documents from Count Johann von Sayn and his son Johann von Sayn to settle the feud with the Archbishop of Cologne . It was the ancestral seat of the Knights of Koberstein. Koberstein Castle was the seat of various noble families over the centuries. Koberstein Castle fell into disrepair during the 18th century and was almost completely demolished.

investment

No remains of the Koberstein Castle are visible today. Koberstein Castle was a low castle with a surrounding moat . The course of the trench can still be roughly guessed from the depressions in the ground. The floor plan of the castle can be reconstructed by measuring the foundations. Koberstein Castle had a rectangular main building with a base area of 17 meters × 12 meters and a round corner tower with a radius of 4.00 to 4.50 meters on the north-eastern edge of the building. The foundation was about two meters thick. According to an archival description from the 16th century, Koberstein Castle was surrounded by a moat that ran around the entire castle with farm buildings and separated the castle from the remaining buildings in the forecourt with another inner ditch. Few remains of the castle can be found in the stables of the Alt-Koberstein farm, where the quarry stones from the masonry of Koberstein Castle were reused.
