history

The spelling of the place name is inconsistent, in addition to "Koberstein", "Coberstein", "Coverstein" or "Koverstein" also occurs in the Middle Ages and modern times.

Koberstein was first mentioned in a medieval document from Count Johann III. von Sayn dated November 6, 1358. This document mentions the " Koberstein Castle ", which Knights had built by Johann von Koberstein before November 1358. A large agricultural property belonged to Koberstein Castle, which formed the Koberstein estate with the castle as its center. The knight Johann von Kober stone, a descendant of the lords of Koberstein in Westerwald , was by Count Adolf of Cleves and Mark with house and yard Lieberhausen invested and built around 1413 on the Agger , the Castle Koverstein in Bergisch Land , which he according to his headquarters in Westerwald named. After the death of the last knight of Koberstein, the castle and the Koberstein farm passed to other noble families. Koberstein was then owned by the nobles von Bicken, came to the Mant von Limbach in 1495 and in the meantime fell again to Count Hermann von Sayn. After his death, Count Heinrich IV. Von Sayn sold the Koberstein castle and farm to Margarethe von Gymnich on September 10, 1588 , making Koberstein free property of the buyer ( allodial property ).

Between 1589 and 1599 Ruprecht von Bruch bought the estate and the Koberstein Castle, which he owned until 1630 and then sold to the von Stepproth family. By inheritance, Koberstein then passed to the von Obsinnig family called Rohe. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Le Grand d'Angelstein family inherited Koberstein. The owners of Koberstein died in 1736 without any descendants. As a result, Koberstein Castle fell into disrepair in the 18th century.

On the other hand, farming was continued on the Koberstein farm and the estate was then sold and leased several times. In 1824 the farm was expanded by Gottlob Heinrich Ehrenfried von Nauendorf. In March 1859, the Kingdom of Prussia granted the necessary concession for the construction of the Kobersteiner Mühle, which was built as an overshot grinding mill and started operations in August 1860. From 1871 to 1878, Koberstein was expanded into an estate. With the construction of the railway from Altenkirchen to Au through the Erbachtal , which runs close to Hof Koberstein and the Kobersteiner Mühle, the Koberstein Estate and the Kobersteiner Mühle were cut off from their lands. The Koberstein farm burned down three times between 1887 and 1909. During the National Socialism, the Koberstein estate was declared a hereditary farm due to the Reichserbhofgesetz . By dividing the Koberstein hereditary farm in 1936, another manor was created (Neu-Koberstein). The former noble Koberstein manor was named "Alt-Koberstein".
