history
The company was founded in 1996 as Kinostar Theater GmbH by the brothers Matthias and Michael Roesch in Heilbronn . Initially the business was limited to film scheduling, but the still young company acquired its first cinema in Neckarsulm in 1997 , to which more and more locations have been added over time. At the beginning of the new millennium, the decision was made to relocate the company headquarters to Stuttgart .
Only one year later, Kinostar Filmverleih GmbH was founded there, which presented itself to the German film industry for the first time by distributing the road movie L'amour . As a small distributor with only low fixed costs, the company limited itself in its first few years to the distribution of art house films and smaller film productions for a limited audience.
In 2008 the company dared to venture into the film business for the masses for the first time by successfully relying on the audience potential of the Turkish-speaking population groups in Germany. The distribution of the Turkish film Recep Ivedik in 2008 not only marked Kinostar's entry into the business of selling Turkish mass cinema , but also the first Bogey Award for distribution. The latter could be repeated with the sequels Recep İvedik 2 , Recep İvedik 3 and Recep İvedik 4 as well as Fetih 1453 , which means the greatest success for the company to date.
With the takeover of “Tanz im Kino” in 2013, the company also entered the alternative content business.
The company is a member of AG Verleih .
Showtimes
In order to avoid the displacement competition and price war in the big cities, Kinostar Theater GmbH primarily operates cinemas in rural locations such as Bretten , Calw and Mosbach . There are also specialized cinemas: while art house is played throughout in Heilbronn, the focus in Neckarsulm is on Turkish films.
Rental program
Kinostar Filmverleih GmbH rents out independent films throughout Europe. Turkish films have a special place here. In the meantime, however, many films in other languages are generally dubbed by Kinostar and distributed in Germany, especially in the art house area.
In addition, Kinostar cooperates with various companies in the industry, for which the company takes on services such as rental tasks and license trading (booking & billing). The most important partner here is Boll AG , which was founded by the German director Uwe Boll and which focuses primarily on filming video games. Boll and Roesch say they have a long friendship.
Dance in the cinema
For the new 2013/14 season, Kinostar took over the distribution of Tanz im Kino, an alternative content that featured the performances of the Bolshoi Ballet from Moscow a . a. broadcasts live on German cinema screens. In cooperation with the French distributor Pathé Live , who is responsible for global sales, and the Belgian end-to-end service dcinex , Kinostar takes care of the marketing and scheduling of the live broadcasts in Germany.
