Kyšperk Castle

The ruins of the Kyšperk Castle (German Burg Geiersberg = Czech Supí hora ) are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the Okres Ústí nad Orlicí , in the foothills of the Eagle Mountains ( Podorlická pahorkatina ). The castle area is located on the hill Hradisko , above the town of Letohrad , which until 1950 had the place name Kyšperk (German Geiersberg ).

history

The castle appears for the first time in 1308 under the name "Geyrsberg" in the Königsaal Chronicle . It was possibly given the name because of its inaccessible location. "Geyrsberg" later became "Geyersberg" and finally "Geiersberg". The current Czech name "Kyšperk" is derived from the German name. At the beginning of the 14th century, the castle was the center of an independent rule. At that time it is said to have been owned by Ješek , who was a member of the von Sandbach family . It is said to have damaged the neighboring Landsberg rulership , which belonged to the Königsaal monastery . 1349–1370 Ješek's son Buzek is the owner of the castle, who was followed by his son Jeniš. From him, before 1396, Nikolaus von Pottenstein auf Sandbach (Mikuláš Žampach z Potštejna) acquired the castle and rule of Geiersberg , who connected the Geiersberg rule with the Sandbach rule. As a result, the castle lost its importance as a mansion and was soon abandoned. Only after the death of Zdeněk von Žampach and Pottenstein and the division of the estate in 1568 between his sons Jan Burian and Zdeněk, the latter received the newly formed Geiersberg lordship with the uninhabited castle, the town of the same name and six villages. Since his older brother Jan Burian, under whose tutelage Zdeněk was, had built a castle below the castle before 1570, the castle no longer acquired any residential significance.

Around 1714 the castle was devastated and the building material obtained in this way was used by the landlord Franz Karl von Kolowrat (František Karel Libštejnský z Kolovrat) to build the pilgrimage chapel of St. Nepomuk, which was completed by his successor Johann Wenzel von Breda in 1734–1736. Since the south-eastern part of the castle hill had to be demolished at the end of the 1860s when the Chlumec nad Cidlinou – Mittelwalde railway connection was built , further parts of the ruins were lost. Part of the foundation walls and trenches have been preserved .

Individual evidence

  1. Strictly speaking, the Königsaaler Chronik does not mention the castle itself, but only the lord of the castle, namely Jenisius de Geyrsberg . See cap. CVII in the first book of the Königsaaler Chronik: Petri Zittaviensis Cronica Aule Director
  2. Podle své těžko přístupné polohy dostal hrad tehdy módní německé jméno Geyersberg - Supí hora. Z německého názvu se vyvinul pozdější název Kyšperk : Kyšperk (zaniklý hrad) , krasnecesko.cz
