The castle ruins Leonstein in the northwest of the resort Pörtschach am Wörthersee , a town in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia , documented the remains of a medieval castle .
investment
The main castle of the hilltop castle presents itself with an irregular bering , partly from the 12th century, grouped around two courtyards, on an elongated rock plateau northwest of Pörtschach. Access is from the north, along the northern curtain wall. On the south side of the complex, an elongated rock head rises up with a four-storey, late Romanesque keep including housing, the oldest part of the complex. In the east courtyard, along the northern curtain wall, one can see a remains of a late Gothic building from the 14th / 15th. Century. In the west courtyard in the southeast corner you can see the remains of the former chapel from the 15th century, on the west side there are still remains of a late Romanesque ministerial tower, the east half is integrated into the Bering.
In front of the main castle to the north, a spacious, late medieval-early modern farmyard opens up.
The former Seeburg is located to the south at the foot of the castle. It was mentioned in a document as early as 1202, today only the scanty wall remains.
history
The castle is mentioned in a document as early as 1166, at that time owned by the Leonsteiners, then Erolzheim and Peuscher. In 1431 the castle was sold to Thomas and Ludwig von Rothenstein and for a short time passed into the possession of the Swabian noble family von Rothenstein . As early as the 17th century, the castle fell into ruins, as a depiction by Valvasor from 1680 shows.
Name distinction
When the “Stöckl” (Castle) Leonstain was built on the street around 1550 , there were no more Leonsteiner descendants. Valvasor describes the castle under the name Leonstain around 1688. It is therefore assumed that only the name of the former Leonsteiner property was taken over here in the expression used at the beginning of the 17th century.
