The Maggenberger were a knightly family in what is now the canton of Friborg in Switzerland .

Castles

The ancestral castle of the Maggenbergers was Burg Maggenberg , also called Burg Niedermaggenberg . This was southwest of Tafers . In the 12th century the family had a second castle built, Obermaggenberg Castle . This castle was located above Alterswil near what is now the hamlet of Obermaggenberg, directly on the slope of the Sensegraben . This castle was destroyed by the Bernese as early as 1387 during the Sempach War. Today only the keep and a cistern remain of this castle.

Family history

The Maggenbergers have called themselves that since the city of Freiburg was founded in 1157 and were initially employers of the Zähringer , later the Counts of Kyburg and the Habsburgs . Between 1250 and 1350, the family provided the mayor of Freiburg seven times . The best-known representative of the family was Ulrich II von Maggenberg , a confidante of Rudolf von Habsburg . Presumably this Ulrich was the builder of Obermaggenberg Castle. The family, which died out in 1370, was buried in the Alteryf Monastery .
