Perg Castle (Upper Austria)
Perg Castle

The Castle Perg , even Perga called, is a Outbound Spur castle and was a seat of the lords of Perg. It was located in the present-day city of Perg (Upper Austria).

location

Perg Castle was located on a hill north of the early Perg settlement on the ~ 40 m high terrain spur called Dollberg . Alternatively discussed locations on the Kalvarienberg (cemetery) or on the left bank of the Naarn river are not sustainable. To the south of the Perg settlement, the Machland plain, criss-crossed by watercourses, extended to the Danube.

history

Perg Castle was a seat of the noble lords of Perg (and Machland) in the 11th and 12th centuries. The brothers Rudolf I (1035–1090) and Walchun I (1050–1100) are considered to be the builders of the castle. From then on, the settlement below the castle was called Perg. Frederick II (1150–1191) was the last to have his seat in Perg. After his death, the widow Agnes moved in with son Friedrich III. (1180–1218) moved to Wald ad Alz Castle, a castle of her family in Upper Bavaria . As a result, the majority of Frederick II's possessions, including Perg Castle and Market, came to the sovereign. In Bavaria the trace of those of Perg was lost.

description

The Dollberg in Perg. View from the west. Photo 2019. On the right, the church tower of Pergkirchen - a former church and castle of the Lords of Perg and Machland (distance: 3.2 km).

There are no remains of the castle on the Dollberg hill and hardly any features of the terrain. Around 1650 a ruinous tower was still visible above the Perg market. It was removed around 1750. In 1830 there were still remains of the wall on the Dollberg and on the slope. These were used in the construction of a farm building for the then Fries brewery, Haus Markt 19 (Dr. Schoberstrasse N ° 1). In 1839 the last foundation walls of the castle were removed. Today there are private houses surrounded by green spaces on the Dollberg plateau.

The plateau turns into a steep sandstone drop to the west and south . The southern steep drop is called Stefaniehain in its current form . The sandstone made it possible to build cellars and corridors without much effort. The Ratgöbluckn is such a walk-in museum corridor and chamber system in Stefaniehain. The name Dollberg refers to it and means about a hollowed mountain .

To the west there is a spring catchment in a railing channel halfway up. To the east, the plateau turns into a steep drop made of granite. A sloping railing channel may indicate a rampart there. Below is the house mill on the Naarn river (Naarntalstrasse N ° 9). The name house mill can be interpreted as a mill that belonged to the castle (the permanent house) .
