The Pernegg castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle in the municipality of Pernegg an der Mur in Styria .
location
The ruin lies “on a ridge that slopes steeply to the east and west above the village of Pernegg” .
history
Pernegg, one of the oldest rulers in Styria and always free to own , was probably built by a free man named Pero; Ulrich von Pernegg was mentioned in a document in 1143. Pernegg was a ministerial of the Margraves of Styria and notorious for his quarreling. In 1322 the castle was expanded; Neighboring properties were acquired to expand the property. Wilhelm von Pernegg was the Styrian governor and highest court master of Duke Friedrichs in 1427.
Later, Pernegg Castle was a base for robbers and highwaymen, and its lord, Wilhelm von Pernegg, took part in the raids. He was captured and incarcerated in 1525 and died in prison in 1532. In 1543 the Pernegger family died out and their property was divided up. Gallus and Moritz von Racknitz became the new owners of the castle. Gallus built a new castle from 1577 , the castle began to deteriorate due to a lack of maintenance. It is currently in ruins.
architecture
The Pernegg castle ruins are strongly overgrown and consist of two parts: the upper castle and the lower castle, of which a square tower is left. Access, interrupted by ditches , leads to the main castle (upper castle) via a defensive wall reinforced with towers . The ruins of a barbican have been preserved between the second and third moat . The elongated courtyard was bordered by residential buildings, which in the east are only preserved as remains of walls. On the keep one was Palas connected. Since the attack side of Pernegg Castle was in the north-west, a semicircular shield wall was built to withstand artillery fire.
The lower castle dates from the 14th century and was secured by a curtain wall , which is currently eight meters high. All the buildings were demolished in the 16th century and used as building material for Pernegg Castle .
