history

The castle belonged to the Counts of Nassau until Wilhelm von Metternich married Anna von Nassau zu Reinhardstein for the second time in 1550. The von Metternich family expanded the building into a palace complex , which they lived in until the French Revolution. Reinhardstein was confiscated during the French Revolution , but returned to the Metternichs in 1798. In 1812 Franz Georg Karl von Metternich , the father of the Austrian Foreign Minister Prince Metternich, sold the castle for demolition. Over the decades, the Warcheburg fell more and more into ruins. Under the direction of the historian Professor Jean Overloop (1915–1994), the reconstruction and refurbishment of the castle complex began in 1969 according to medieval documents. Overloop discovered many contemporary drawings by the Liège painter Mathieu-Antoine Xhrouet (1672–1747), who put the castle on paper from many perspectives. A collection of armor, tapestries, liturgical robes and life-size, hand-carved figures inside the castle underlines the importance of the place.
